At Canyon Rim Dental, our dentists, Dr Sean Cook and Dr. Brian Mooney, provide preventive treatments and diagnostics such as:
- Cone Beam 3D Imaging
- Dental Sealants
- Digital X-Rays
- Fluoride Treatment
- Oral Cancer Screening
The goal of preventive care is to protect your smile from damage caused by tooth decay, periodontal disease (gum disease) and other damaging dental conditions. Preventive dentistry works to avert these diseases before they cause damage that requires repair. We offer a number of preventive dental treatments to help you keep your smile in the best possible health. These services include dental sealants and dental cleanings; visiting our office regularly ensures that we detect and treat any early signs of damage before they become more extensive and painful.

General and Preventative Dental Procedures At Canyon Rim Dental
Depending on the person, there may be the need for one or more of the following procedures that we perform at our office:
Regular Check-Ups
We recommend that you come into our office for a regular check-up every 6 months. The reason for this is to begin early treatment of certain dental diseases as they arise and to prevent any future disease or damage. While you are with us, we will examine your teeth, gums and mouth. We will ask you questions about how often you brush your teeth and floss, and advise you on your diet, smoking and alcohol use, and teeth-cleaning habits. If you have any questions about your teeth, mouth or gums, we are more than happy to answer those for you!
Teeth Cleanings
The American Dental Association recommends that you visit your dentist at least once a year for a teeth cleaning. These cleanings are routinely performed, and are necessary to prevent disease or damage to your teeth – especially if you have a history of dental infection. Regular teeth cleaning will help to remove significant amounts of plaque and bacteria that buildup on the surfaces of your teeth. If left unchecked – plaque and tartar can cause tooth decay, cavities, erosion of gum tissue, gum disease and other problems. So don’t skip your regular teeth cleanings – they are quick and painless, and definitely worth it.
Oral Cancer Screenings
Apart from regular cleanings, our dentists can perform oral cancer screenings, which helps prevent cancer from spreading and advancing to the neck and throat. These screenings only necessitate the dentist looking into your mouth and checking for red or white patches or mouth sores. He or she may also check for lumps and abnormalities. You should get screened for oral cancer every three years if you are over the age of 20, and once a year if you are over 40 years old.
Dental Fillings
In the case of dental decay or severe discoloration, it may be necessary to get a dental filling to reduce the risk of pain, infection, or tooth loss. This procedure consists of removing the decayed tooth tissue, then filling in the space with a dental filling material. Our Canyon Rim office is mercury-free! We only use tooth-colored fillings such as composite or ceramic.
Mouth Guards
The purpose of a mouth guard is to reduce the side effects of teeth grinding and clenching. We are able to diagnose and develop mouth guards for patients in need of a solution to their subconscious teeth grinding. Mouth guards cannot prevent bruxism—involuntary habitual grinding of the teeth during sleep—but it can reduce jaw pain, jaw muscle soreness, headaches and tooth wear. Every mouth is different, and because of this, we create custom mouth guards for everyone. Consult with one of our dentists in Mesa, AZ to discuss mouth guard options today by calling (480) 962-1500.
Tooth Extractions
There are many reasons why you may need a tooth extraction, including due to decay or infection, trauma or injury, teeth crowding, pre-orthodontic treatment, and for wisdom teeth extraction. Depending on the state of the tooth, it is possible to fully remove the tooth in one piece, but it is likely the tooth will need to be extracted in multiple pieces. Be sure to follow all of our dentists’ recommendations both before and after the procedure for a successful extraction.
