Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Going to the dentist can be difficult. We understand that every patient has their own concerns with sitting in the dentist chair, and that’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to creating a seamless dental experience through sedation technology!Â
There are many benefits to sedation dentistry, including reducing dental anxiety and dental phobia, preventing a strong gag reflex, and improving your experience if you need multiple and/or more complex procedures. Another benefit is that the dentist is able to work faster, allowing you to leave sooner! For many more painful procedures, it is definitely worth the cost to use sedation dentistry to help you get through it.Â
Our office is delighted to help you during your dental visits by providing resources that maximize your comfort. If you have any questions about sedation dentistry, be sure to ask your dentist during your next appointment.
Dental Sedation Options at Canyon Rim Dental
Because each patient is different, we provide 3 different forms of safe dental sedation. Our dentists will answer any of your questions before the procedure and will instruct and advise you as you participate in any of the following forms of sedation.
Laughing Gas
A mild form of sedation, laughing gas is great for keeping you conscious during an operation while distracting you from the operation itself. It is a colorless, non-flammable gas that allows you to relax and effectively manage pain while we help you with your dental needs. Nitrous oxide—the chemical compound that makes up laughing gas—slows down your brain and your body’s responses, making it a great option for those with dental anxiety.
Oral Conscious Sedation
The next level of sedation technology is oral conscious sedation. Usually in pill form, this medication will be given to you about an hour before a dental procedure. Oral conscious sedation puts you at ease, making you feel somewhat groggy, calm, and relaxed. There are fewer stronger side effects and risks that are associated with general anesthesia when choosing this form.
IV Sedation
The most intense form of sedation is done intravenously. Although you are not completely put under, you are in a deep state of relaxation and will feel no pain during your procedure. It takes about 15 to 30 minutes after the drug has been administered and entered your bloodstream for it to kick in. IV sedation can leave you feeling loopy and even confused. After the needle has been removed, you will begin to wake up in about 20 minutes and be fully recovered within 6 hours. We will help you stay safe while using IV sedation!
